Creating Better Experiences for Employees and Customers: Meet Kayla Welty
Armed with a marketing degree from Mount Mercy University and a few months of experience with a local security services firm, Kayla Welty joined the CEC team in 2014.
For a year, she served as a sales executive for K-12 and government markets before moving into service sales. Covering the entire state of Iowa, she spent nearly four years helping customers understand fire alarm code, how to meet national requirements, and how to comply with AHJ standards. Along the way, she also developed a strong love for fire alarm technology.
In November 2019, Welty moved into a sales service manager role, training and managing four salespeople who worked across three states. Working together, the team significantly increased revenue by helping more customers in Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota keep their buildings safe.
In early 2021, she shifted from sales to operations, becoming CEC’s director of testing and inspection. “It’s a lot to learn, but I really love fire alarm testing and inspection,” says Welty. “I know what it’s capable of becoming, and I’m excited to be part of that. Every change we make creates a better employee experience for workers and a better service experience for customers.”
Meet CEC’s Director of Testing and Inspection Kayla Welty!
Q: What are you responsible for in your new role?
The biggest thing I’m focused on that will impact our employees and customers is culture and making sure people enjoy working for the inspection team. That excitement and enthusiasm bleeds over to our customers. You can tell when someone likes their job.
I’m also working on improving consistency across CEC offices. Whether you’re a customer in Green Bay or Des Moines, you should get the same experience from CEC’s Fire Alarm Testing and Inspection division. We’re also focused on continuing education and training so employees can continue to earn certifications, which helps us expand offerings for our customers.
Q: What makes you most excited about working at CEC?
We’re driving so much positive change right now at all levels—and it’s coming from the top down. CEC is truly becoming an even greater place to work. We have a real family feel.
Q: What do you enjoy most about what you're doing right now?
I love helping people protect their buildings; I understand that not everyone is super excited about fire alarms, so I like being the expert who can help. I’m excited for this new challenge. I’m learning a new side of the business, and I’m always open to feedback and advice along the way. I truly believe in our Fire Alarm Testing and Inspection division. We’re going to continue to grow it and make it a huge part of the company.
Q: Is there a CEC initiative you’ve been involved with that you’re especially proud of?
I’m proud of some of my hires when I was the sales service manager. I loved watching and helping people develop, teaching them about this industry, getting them excited about this industry, and helping them develop a new career path along the way.
Q: What’s a fun/interesting fact about you that most people don’t know?
I’m a wannabe sommelier with zero qualifications. Specifically, I’m a red wine lover. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m so into reds that I need to develop a palate for white wines, too. I’m also a turkey hunter, and I love fishing. Normally, I go every few years to Washington to fish the jetty for salmon.
Q: How do you spend your free time?
I have an eight-month-old daughter, so I spend my free time on mom duty, which is great. I love spending time with her on weekends. As much of a struggle as it has been to be at home so much, I also feel super blessed. I’ve been able to slow down and spend time with her. I probably wouldn’t have gotten this much time with her in any other circumstance.
Q: If you could do one other job at CEC for a day, what would it be?
I would love to be Purchasing & Inventory Manager Tom Lenoch for a day! He’s got eyes on everything. He’s ordering all the parts for all our projects, so he gets to see everything that’s coming up. It would be exciting to know about all the different jobs happening across CEC.
