Making Great First Impressions: Meet Shelley Johnson

If you’ve called or visited CEC’s headquarters location in Hiawatha, IA, in the last few decades, then you’ve heard Shelley Johnson’s voice. She’s often the very first person you interact with when you contact CEC.

Since 2000, Shelley has served as our receptionist, responding to all kinds of questions and solving problems for customers. She also provides accounting support, completing daily bank deposits and helping with accounts payable and receivables. If you have questions about invoices or statements, Shelley has the answer.

Prior to CEC, she served as the receptionist for Entre Information Systems in Cedar Rapids, IA, for eight years. When CEC purchased Entre Information Systems in 2000, Shelley retained her position. We’re so glad she’s still part of the CEC family!

Meet CEC Customer Advocate Shelley Johnson!

Q: What makes you most excited about working at CEC?
The people. I feel like I have a chance to make a new friend with every new person who walks through the door. The older I get, the more I feel like mom. I love to make the newbies feel welcome. I’ve made lifelong friends through the years. I also enjoy meeting the expectations of CEC’s customers. I will stay on an issue until it’s resolved—even if it’s out of my field of knowledge. I want the customer to know I’m here if there is anything I can do to assist until there is satisfaction.

Q: What do you enjoy most about what you're doing right now?
I love being up here in the front lobby to be the ambassador for CEC! Every day is something different and enjoyable. Our new office dog, Ruby, who belongs to CEO Kim Lehrman, is probably the highlight of every day. I just have to be careful not to step on her! She’ll make random visits to my desk—mostly to see what’s in my garbage.

Q: How does a typical day play out for you at CEC? What are you responsible for?
I start out the day getting the office ready for business. I work on the bank deposit first thing after that. Then, I mostly assist accounting with anything that needs to be done. Answering customer calls is also a huge part of my day.

Q: What’s a fun/interesting fact about you that most people don’t know?
When I lived in Tennessee, I was part of a ladies singing group through my church. We had the opportunity to record at a Nashville studio.

Q: How do you spend your free time?
I love to square dance! Sometimes I have to travel to get to a good one, but it’s always worth the time and effort. I also love spending time with my rescue dog, Bella. She is an 85-pound Rottweiler and is quite a challenge—but worth every moment. We are working on manners. She loves everyone, which drew me to her immediately. I knew she was the one for me.

Q: If you could do one other job at CEC for a day, what would it be?
I would love to travel with Healthcare Systems Engineer Scott Brumwell and Healthcare Sales Executive Darla Portz one day just to see what goes on out in the field. It would be fun to visit our customers in person rather than just on the phone.
