Background

UnityPoint Health-Trinity Muscatine is the newest member of the Trinity Regional Health System. It supports 80 inpatient beds along with on-campus physician clinics, surgical suites, a BirthPlace, radiology services, cardiac rehabilitation, new operating rooms that opened in August 2013, and a full-service ER that opened in June 2013.

Customer Needs

In the 1980s, CEC installed and updated nurse call systems in an older part of Trinity Muscatine. When the hospital began a phased project that included a complete retrofit of radiology and labs, as well as construction of new emergency and operating rooms, they remembered the work CEC had done years ago. Project team members JE Dunn and Heery both recommended the company to Trinity Muscatine as well, so the hospital selected CEC to provide technology solutions for this series of projects.

Solution

As part of Trinity Muscatine’s retrofit and new construction projects, CEC implemented technology solutions to increase staff efficiency and patient satisfaction. After partnering with CEC, UnityPoint Health-Trinity Muscatine now has:

  • The ability to manage pre-op rooms and provide room and patient status with simple touch points to remove unnecessary steps and calls.
  • Capability of sending cleaning and stocking requests through the touch of a button, aiding in preparation efficiency and improving capacity.
  • New overhead paging that ties into an existing system installed in the 1970s and 1980s.
  • An intercom system that allows staff to conduct all-pages through the entire operating room suite and adjoining areas.
  • Automatic routing of events, alerts, and escalations to the right caregivers.

I didn’t think it was possible to do what we wanted with our nurse call system because of our existing phones. But CEC spent hours making sure it would work. I kept thinking we wouldn’t pull it off, but they figured it out. From the sales staff all the way through, I’ve been extremely pleased with the CEC staff and the attention they’ve given us.
