City of Dubuque Traffic Cameras
GOVERNMENT
Located on the Mississippi River, the City of Dubuque, Iowa, is home to more than 58,000 people. About 20 years ago, the city engaged CEC to introduce a traffic camera network, marking the beginning of a long-standing partnership focused on creating safer, more efficient city traffic operations.
Initially, traffic camera networks were introduced to help cities with basic traffic management, such as light changes, but their role has evolved over the past couple of decades. Today, in addition to traffic management and monitoring, cities like Dubuque rely on traffic camera networks to assist with public safety, incident detection and response, data collection, and to inform urban planning and infrastructure improvements.
SOLUTION
Collaborating closely with the City of Dubuque, CEC helped install fiber infrastructure to establish a substantial camera network, comprising more than 1,250 cameras throughout Dubuque’s intersections and high-traffic areas.
Over the past 20 years, the city has relied heavily on CEC to keep its traffic camera network operational, despite ongoing environmental challenges and infrastructure changes. When network equipment overheats or fails due to weather, CEC’s team provides a rapid response, repairing or replacing crucial components. We leverage a roster of network partners to ensure all hardware is suited to evolving environmental conditions. As new intersections and functions are added, we continue to expand the network, providing weather-optimized hardware installations and upgrades. We also increase the bandwidth between intersections to ensure faster connectivity as critical information is routed back to Dubuque’s traffic building.
